make and bring template in for students

ELA: teach students the rules of haiku, (5,7,5 syllables) ask them if they have any questions. then have students go into groups, where they will write and share a haiku that:

Includes the word “Bird”

Expressing their feelings on school

about their favourite hobby/activity

including their favourite food

their favourite season

finally, as students to write a haiku on whatever they want

Lesson Plan 2

Lesson on powerpoint: 15 minutes including video

Introduction to debating: Have students partner up, and play ro sham bo with their partners, winners go to one team, losers on the other. Introduce the topic “Dogs are better than cats”. Winners of ro sham bo will be the Proposition, and the losers will be Opposition. Give 3 minutes of preparation before debate starts. Proposition will start the opening statement, then the opposition. Students will then begin to provide points and counterarguments. Debate will be ran as a group activity, and the same person cannot speak twice in a row. Debate goes on for 10 minutes while Mediator keeps track of points. Winner will be announced at the end of the debate. Mediator will remind students when there is 5 minutes left, then one minute left. – 17 minutes

Large debate: Winners of previous ro sham bo will now be Opposition, former losers of ro sham bo will be Proposition. Students will be given 7 minutes to prepare their arguments for “Homework is essential for learning”. Teams will again start with Proposition providing a opening statement, followed by the oppositions opening statement. Proposition will bring up the first point to open the debate, followed by a rebuttal from the opposition. They will have 15 minutes to debate, while mediator keeps track of points and providing remaining time. Debate will end with a closing argument from either side, and the reveal of who won. -27 minutes

Exit slip: have students reflect on what the importance of Debate is on sticky notes, and hand them back to you
