Introduction to Learning Project

We listen and we don’t judge…. I  regularly eat Kraft Dinner a few times a week. I do this not only because I think that it tastes great, but also because I can’t cook to save my life.

There are many factors to blame for this inability to perform a basic life skill, but I’ll name a few. Firstly, I have never found any pleasure in cooking and my ADHD makes it seem rather overwhelming to plan and execute multiple home-cooked a day.

Growing up, my mom cooked a lot but didn’t like people in her space while she did it. I have since realized that she also hated cooking for a family of 9 multiple times a day. Anyway, she got annoyed if I ever tried to experiment in the kitchen and did not encourage any culinary endeavours.

Then, I spent five years living in a dorm and eating every meal in a cafeteria. Thus, I never had access to a fully functional kitchen nor any need to make my own meals.

I moved straight from a dorm room to a house with my husband in the summer of 2023. I was absolutely convinced that this would finally be my opportunity to shine the kitchen. I finally had my own house, no one to cook for me, and a husband to share meals with. However, that’s not how things have worked out.

Now, the extent of my “cooking” includes food items such as canned tomato soup, pizza pops, air-fryed chicken nuggets, frozen pizza, microwavable meals, grilled cheese, cereal, and of course, boxed KD. I know, it’s nasty and probably sounds a lot like what they serve to kids at a pre-school.

So, this brings me to my Learning Project for EDTC 300. I have decided that this is finally the time to force myself to grow my cooking ability and incorporate fresher ingredients into my diet. My plan is to learn how to cook using various online resources. I will cook at least one new recipe from scratch each week and document how that turns out. I will spend the next week making grocery lists and finding resources that I will use to teach myself to cook.

By the end of this semester, I would like to have at least a dozen new somewhat healthy recipes to add to my meal rotation.

This is such a great goal! Cooking is definitely intimidating at first, but taking it one recipe at a time is such a smart way to start. It’s awesome that you’re committing to this. I’m sure it’ll inspire others too. Can’t wait to see what recipes you discover along the way.
