Trying to become an influencer (and failing)

I’ve been incredibly unmotivated to cook any elaborate meals lately and decided that today I just needed a win in the kitchen. I chose to cook (if you can even call it that) my favourite go-to comfort meal: Kraft Dinner.

While making KD was well within my comfort zone, filming a cute TikTok video of the process was not. I’ve spent far too many hours scrolling the app, but have very little experience editing and posting videos. My vision for the video was a multitude of clips put together with a voice-over and background music. Despite too many hours of effort, I was only able to achieve 2/3. This is a bit humiliating since I consider myself a bit more tech savvy than this.

After filming the clips and uploading them to TikTok, I tried to add a voice-over that would explain my steps and just make the video a little bit more fun to watch. I was going to use my own voice until the AI voice-over feature caught my attention. I had no idea that this feature existed and thought that it would be fun to test it out.

I spent about an hour typing out chunks of texts for the AI voice that I selected named “Deena” to speak aloud throughout my TikTok. While in the editing page on the app, I reviewed the video and it all seemed great. I had the voice-over perfectly lined up with my clips and even added a trending song in the background.

It was when I tried to save the video that things began going downhill. I wanted to just save the video as a draft and then download it to my phone. My aim was to avoid having to actually post the TikTok on the app because my video was cringe and I didn’t want my friends to watch it. I’ve done this before and it’s worked well. But for whatever reason, after I saved it as a draft and clicked on it, my video became edited with the AutoCut feature. It messed everything up and I essentially had to start from scratch. Once I had finally resurrected my video, I decided to not make the same mistake twice and just post the TikTok straight to the app. Sadly, it posted without the voice-over. The clips are edited correctly and it saved with the right background music, but all of the work that I put into the voice-over is gone.

I have no idea what I did wrong. I think that the finished product is still fairly decent, but I liked the version with the voiceover far better. I would like to try this type of video again and see if I can figure out what I did wrong. If you have any ideas, I’d love to hear them.

To add to the mess, when I attempted to upload the TikTok to YouTube so that I can share it here, it copyrighted the background music and would not allow me to post it at all. I could leave the TikTok publicly posted on the actual TikTok app for you guys to see it, I cannot handle having my friends and students see it and think that I’m actually trying to become some sort of influencer right now (especially about Kraft Dinner lol). So, in order to link my TikTok through Youtube I had to take out the trendy TikTok music and replace it with some cringey royalty free music.

So, here’s the finished product. Please be nice haha. This has been a struggle.

Oh no! I’m so sorry you had so many troubles. I’ve been using TikTok as well and it can be so time-consuming. Even with your troubles, your video looks great!

I love the idea of using the AI generated voice! I absolutely hate hearing the sound of my voice on video or recordings, so this would be a great tool for me as well. Thank you for sharing!

“Kraft Dinner is always a solid win! Props to you for trying something new with TikTok—it’s so frustrating when editing doesn’t go as planned. Losing the voice-over must have been annoying.Maybe saving an external backup next time could help? Either way, I’m sure it turned out great! Thinking of trying another video soon?”

I get how frustrating that must have been trying to edit a TikTok and it not going the way you wanted. Technology can be a pain in the butt at times, but I’m amazed how you pished through all that and made the best out of it! Also, the final product of KD still looks amazing, it’s my go to meal as well!

I know if I tried this I would 100% have the same struggles. Glad you had some fun making this KD. You can never go wrong! And it definitely still counts as cooking.
