About two weeks ago, I decided to begin a bit of a diet. I am an avid weight lifter and bulked this winter to put on some extra muscle. Now, I am attempting to cut down my weight a bit before summer. Thus, I have had to drastically alter my eating habits and search for filling but low calorie options.
A favourite cut food of mine has been fried eggs because they are high in protein, have relatively low calories, and fill me up pretty well. However, I’ve never really learned how to properly fry an egg and just just been winging it lately.
I decided to turn to TikTok to find out how to take my fried eggs to the next level, since I have been leaning on them so much throughout my diet. At first, nearly every video I came across started with either copious amounts of butter or cooking oil. While they certainly make the eggs taste better, they nearly double the calories of the meal. Therefore, I looked for videos that did not add any extra calories to the eggs.
I ended up using this TikTok video to instruct my fried egg cooking. As shown in the video, I used a no-calorie cooking oil spray to grease up the pan. This is a great alternative to cooking oils or butter.
@kurtney__d How I make fried eggs with no oil! I love fried eggs but always made with oil but now I’ve found a healthier way to make them! #friedeggs #lowcalfriedeggs #nooilrecipes #howtomakefriedeggs #lowcalorierecipe #caloriecounting #flexibledieting #allfoodsfit #tiktoksouthafrica

While this is similar to how I cooked fried eggs in the past, I had never thought to cover the eggs with a lid and allow them to steam. This method allowed the top of the eggs to cook and prevented me from having to flip them.
For a bit of flavour, I added a dash of salt and pepper (which does not add extra calories) The end result was delicious, healthy, and filling.
I added a unbuttered piece of toast with the eggs. I also took advantage of hot sauce being essentially calorie-free and added a splash of that on the eggs.
While this meal is a bit bland, I enjoyed it and would certainly make it again. When you’re eating in a calorie deficit, even fried eggs and plain toast tastes amazing. The total calories for the meal was just 285. That’s far less calories that I would usually eat for lunch when I would make a box of Kraft Dinner. However, the eggs and toast filled me up just as much.
I am glad that I turned to TikTok to show me how to improve my fried eggs. I find the videos on there simple and easy to follow.
Going forward, I plan to find other diet-friendly recipes and snacks on TikTok and similar platforms.
Thanks for reading!
Honestly, what can TikTok not teach us haha your eggs look perfectly cooked! I myself have been trying to perfect poached eggs because those are my favorite. I would have never assumed that butter adds so many more calories to a meal, I measure that usually with my heart! Your eggs look perfect, good job!
The eggs look good! I love eggs because you can do so many different things with them! I tend to take mine over-hard because I can’t stand runny yolk, or I’ll scramble them. Incorporating eggs into a diet is great because of their benefits! Good job!
As someone who considers themself an Egg-thusiast, I speak from experience when I say cooking eggs can be a pain. Every time I try to make fried eggs, I crack the yolk, I will definitely take a page out of your book and try these tips out.
Hi Aili, really enjoyed reading your post — it’s so refreshing to see someone sharing realistic and healthy habits, especially around meals like fried eggs that we often overlook! 🍳 Your strategy of using a no-calorie spray and the lid-steaming trick was genius — I’ve never tried that but now I’m curious to give it a go.
