Throughout this semester I embarked upon a journey to stop eating KD everyday and finally learn to cook. While I have substansionally decreased my KD intake, I wouldn’t say that I’ve become too much of a skilled cook quite yet. Here’s an overview of what my weeks entailed:
Post #1: Introduction to Learning Project
I started things off by explaining why I tried to avoid cooking. I wrote that I find cooking to be overwhelming and not very enjoyable. I was hoping that that would change throughout this semester.
Post #2: Cooking up some chicken breasts
This was one of my most successful weeks. I followed two different TikTok tutorials and learned how to properly cook chicken breasts. I didn’t find this too challenging and I was excited to start using this new skill in future recipes.
The third week, I decided to test out Riverside by Spotify to record and edit a podcast about my learning project progress thus far. I spoke about struggling with a complicated pasta recipe and how I still didn’t find cooking to be worth the time and effort.
Post #4: My First (and Last) Time Cooking Shrimp
This was by far the lowest point of my learning project. I got way in over my head cooking shrimp tacos. I learned that I will never cook raw shrimp again (it’s just too nasty of a process). I also had a hard time navigating the recipe that I found from Pinterest because the post was far too wordy.
Post #5: Trying to become an influencer (and failing)
After two discouraging weeks, I decided to go back to a tried-and-true classic: Kraft Dinner. The cooking itself went great. But trying to record a TikTok video of the cooking process with a voiceover and music proved itself to be a challenge.
To improve moral, I decided to scale things back again and cook something simple. I followed a TikTok tutorial on how to fry eggs perfectly. This went great!
In the seventh week, I was counting my calories and decided to try out the app YAZIO to help me with this. There were some things that I appreciated about the app, but I ended up deleting it the same day I got it because of all of the annoying ads and pop-ups.
I ended up finding a really great crunchy egg wrap recipe on TikTok that I tried out this week. The end result tasted great, but I did poorly execute a few of the steps. I also found the video to be a bit fast and hard to follow in certain places.
Post #9: Crunchy Egg Wraps (Take 2)
I attempted the same crunchy egg wrap recipe that I made in the prior post. This time around, I executed the steps perfectly and realized that it was my new favourite lunch.
I showed off a great website that I discovered that gives you recipes based on the ingredients that you already have in your kitchen. I highly recommend that you check out the My Fridge Food website and try it out yourself.
Throughout this semester, I have discovered some new go-to recipes such as the crunchy egg wraps. I have also learned some valuable skills in the kitchen such as to cook chicken breasts and how to properly fry eggs. However, I would say that I still feel pretty out of my element in the kitchen and have not fallen in love with cooking, as I was hoping I might. I have learned the types of recipes that I enjoy cooking and those that I will likely stay away from in the future.
I would say that the most valuable online resource that I used this semester for my learning journey was actually TikTok. I found it to have simple, easy-to-follow videos. I’ve really grown an appreciation for the app. While it has not turned me into a master chef overnight, I do think that I will keep using it in the future to learn cooking skills and discover healthy recipes.
