Kindergarten – Math – Colours

Below are more playful learning invitations I set up during my Internship in pre-k and kindergarten. In math, we were on our colours unit and starting our shapes unit next. To go with the playful learning I set up below, we also had coloured-themed days where we did fun activities focusing on different colours, as well as colour mixing, colour sorting, and colour matching. Colours were present in many other aspects of the classroom, like with Lego or building blocks or in the loose parts area.

I set out these super fun rock gem toys for my pre-k and kindergarten students to play with while also exploring with matching colours and exposing students to different shapes. They loved to use the hammer and tools to break them open, even though it was difficult sometimes. Then, students tried to match the inside gem colour to the rock colour and find the matching rock pieces so they could set it up to break all the rocks again.

Above is another cross-curricular playful invitation I set up in my Pre-K and Kindergarten Internship classroom. I froze baking soda, water, and food colouring in ice cube trays, some of which were letter-shaped. Then, I put the frozen shapes on the tuff tray and gave students pipettes and small bowls of vinegar. This tray was intended to allow students to play and investigate with different colours and shapes, as well as the fun fizzing caused by the baking soda and vinegar reaction, while also helping to develop stronger hand/finger muscles by using the pipettes. My students loved this one after I did it the first time and kept asking for fizzy science back so I ended up setting this invitation up a second time time.
