My Extracurricular Activities

I was very involved in extracurricular activities both at my school and in my community. I was a part of the drama club from grades six to twelve. I took soccer and basketball from grades six to nine, my school did not have a senior team for me to play on for either sport. I was a part of my school’s travel club but we did not get to go on the trip we had planned because of the pandemic.

My two favorite things I did through the school were the Student Representative Council (SRC) and volleyball.  I was an active member of the SRC starting in grade 6. In grade 11 we decided to switch up how we ran the SRC and I became the first president. I was president for both my grade eleven and twelve years. I absolutely loved volunteering and organizing events and fundraisers. I joined the volleyball team at my school in grade six and played until grade twelve. I sadly did not get much of a season my last year because of COVID-19 but I loved the game and playing with the girls on my team.

I did many things outside of school as well. I played on two different club volleyball teams, one from grades six to eight and the other in grades ten and eleven. The first one I played on was in my hometown and we focussed on learning and improving our skills. The next team I played on was in a town about fifteen minutes away. I loved playing on that team and we did really well. We won provincials the year I was in grade 10 and we went and played at nationals that year too. My grade eleven year with that team was cut short because of the pandemic and then I could not play again the next year because of COVID-19 again.

I was a part of the dance club in my hometown for fourteen years, or since I was four years old. I did everything from tap to hip hop to musical theatre. For my last four years with the club, I was an assistant dance teacher for the junior dance classes. I loved helping teach the kids new dance moves and helping them learn their routines. It made me so happy when they would call me Miss Alannah.

When I was in grade eleven I had the amazing opportunity of assisting the grade one teacher in my school. For an hour each day, during my spare period, I would go down to the grade one room in my school. I assisted with crafts, helped the kids read and sound out their sight words, helped with activities they were doing, read books to them, or worked with the kids who needed a little extra help. It was my favorite part of each day. I would walk in the door and be bombarded with hugs and kids wanting to tell me stories. On the day of my graduation ceremony, I had stopped at the school and went to the classroom. The kids’ faces light up when I walked in the door. The girls kept saying I looked like a princess in my dress. I was able to build amazing relationships with the children in that grade, as I babysat over half of them regularly too.

I have also done other random volunteer jobs in and around my community. I have volunteered with the Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus, and the Catholic church. I have been a leader of the three-year-old group at a day camp in my town. I have worked in the kitchen at soccer tournaments and other events. I have volunteered to run bingos. I always enjoyed being active in my school and my community, especially when it involved kids.
