Learning ASL Week 2

This week I decided to use a website which is also an app called Pocket Sign to continue my learning in ASL. My main focus was learning the alphabet and how to finger spell my own name! This was surprisingly a lot easier than I had anticipated and I caught on to it relatively quickly. So I learned to sign my dog Willow’s name and my husband’s name as well. Which was also a great way to practice the different letters in the alphabet.

I did find learning the alphabet was relatively easy and I did catch on pretty quickly. There are still some letters that I need to go back and check how to sign them correctly. I found that I mix up “s” and “x” the most, and “q” has been hard to remember as well.

Although I found the alphabet easier to learn than anticipated, it was really tricky getting into the fingerspelling trying to put the signed letters to use. I also didn’t think it would be so tricky moving your fingers and hands from one sign to another which was an interesting addition to my ASL learning. Hopefully with continued practice over the next several weeks I can improve my ASL fluency and feel a little bit more confident 🙂

Hey Alycia! Looks like you are off to a great start with your learning project! I have never really looked at the ASL alphabet but it was cool to see you spell your name out and see that the sign letters looks very similar to the regular alphabet letters.

I am sure the more practice you have the more comfortable you will be with forming the letters and being able to string words together!

    Good Luck!
