    Reflecting on the digital world

I am struggling with this blog post, and not really sure where to take it. Since we are reflecting on topics considered in class, I am not sure whether there are guided questions that we should consider while thinking about topics such as cyber-vigilantism, cyber-shaming, and our digital footprints. So I guess I will just wing it! I believe that all these topics that were discussed can make for meaningful conversations to have with our students. We are very deep in the digital age and it is only going to progress and adapt in the future. Teaching students about their online presence is important so students truly understand the risks…

    Digital Citizenship in the Classroom

I believe there are many ways to approach digital citizenship in the classroom, which involves integrating the Ribble’s nine elements. I primarily work with high school students, I hope that over their years in school they have learned about digital safety, and responsibility, but these are still things I would integrate into an early lesson to refresh their memories. I am currently teaching in a supportive role, but when I did my internship I taught 2 sections of Health 9. The Health curriculum offers a lot of opportunity to discuss internet safety and students digital citizenship. There is a Decision making outcome where you could incorporate activities to enhance students understanding…

    Lingvano…Duolingo but with Sign Language

This week I decided to try another new app. Trying to keep my options open and experience all the resources that are available, yeno? I recently downloaded Lingvano which is very similar to Duolingo but without the intense owl haunting you in your sleep! The app is very similar to the other apps I have tried and talked about in my previous blogs, but so far this one is my favourite. When you first download and open the app it asks you to sign up. Just your name, email, and a password for your account. Unfortunately the app is only free for the first few lessons. However you can use…

    Ms. Kohut

Hey ALL! Welcome to my blog, I can’t wait to introduce you and take you along my learning journey. I am Alycia Kohut, aka Ms. Kohut and aka just recently Mrs. Lanigan! I am in my second year of teaching, currently on a temporary contract in a high school setting. I mainly work with students from grade 9-12, but while I was subbing I worked with students as young as Grade 2. My degree is in secondary education with a major in health and minor in social. While subbing I was working frequently in inclusive classrooms, such as VAP, FIAP, and LRT. While working in these program classrooms, I realized…

Eliminating distractions one Sign at a time?!

On my next steps of learning ASL, I wanted to focus on some signs that could be helpful in the classroom. Learning signs such as asking to use the washroom, get water, ask if they are paying attention and more. Again this week I used Youtube, but I used a different poster under the account “Learn How To Sign”. She is an ASL teacher and explains signs that she finds to be helpful in a classroom setting and the reasons as to why signing in the classroom, especially during work periods can be great alternatives. In the video, the poster talks about how you can use ASL to give students commands…

    Learning ASL… 1, 2, 3 GO!

This week in my learning journey with ASL I decided to learn numbers which were relatively simple to learn but remembering which numbers use which hand motions and watching someone else sign them had me a bit confused. The numbers 1-5 were simple, it was the same as how many people count on their hands. Starting with your index finger to count the number one, then add your middle finger to count the number 2. They throw a little curve ball at you and add the thumb to count 3 rather than the ring finger. After this you drop the thumb and add your pointer to pinky fingers to count…
