What’s next in the Learning Journey?

This week I did a lot of my learning using an instagram account that I follow. Her name is Mckinnon Galloway. I actually found her account over a year ago, and her personal story plus her ASL teachings were the reason I decided to follow her. She was diagnosed in high school with an illness called NF2 (I learned that essentially these are tumors that grow on nerves throughout the body). The doctors found two brain tumors and she was told she would be deaf before she graduated high school. With this illness, she mentions that most of the time the tumors are not cancerous (but they can turn cancerous).…

    Learning ASL Week 2

This week I decided to use a website which is also an app called Pocket Sign to continue my learning in ASL. My main focus was learning the alphabet and how to finger spell my own name! This was surprisingly a lot easier than I had anticipated and I caught on to it relatively quickly. So I learned to sign my dog Willow’s name and my husband’s name as well. Which was also a great way to practice the different letters in the alphabet. I did find learning the alphabet was relatively easy and I did catch on pretty quickly. There are still some letters that I need to go…

Significant Role of Technology on the Daily

I think that technology is a great resource for us to have at the tips of our fingers. I also see while there may be many pros about technology there are also many cons as well. Coming into this school year and being told by our admin that there will be a no phone policy in the classroom I was skeptical for many reasons. One of those reasons being is that, smart phones are not going anywhere, and completely eliminating the use won’t teach students how to work in a real world setting with a cell phone distraction. Additionally I am also very grateful for this change because as many…

    My Journey of learning ASL

For my learning project, I decided to learn ASL. I have wanted to learn sign language for years, and have thought about taking classes in the past. Classes were always very limited and I kept putting it off, SOOO now feels like a better time than ever! I am pretty limited in what I currently know in sign language, anything I have learned has been through watching youtube, and googling phrases. I worked in a pharmacy throughout my undergrad and learned some of the basics such as “thank you”, “please” and “you’re welcome” to be able to communicate with our deaf and hard of hearing patients. I am happy to…

    A little bit about me…

Hi all, my name is Alycia! I was born and raised here in Regina, Sk. I am in my second year as a secondary teacher majoring in health, minoring in social. I have always loved working and caring for others, I also have a major love for travelling, and food which is a great perk when travelling. I have been to 12 different countries and hopefully many more in the future. I love to experience new culture, traditions, and living experiences and I believe I get this both teaching and travelling. I have quite a bit of limited experience with educational technology. I have used WordPress and edusites for previous…
