Classroom Applications and the SAMR Model

Substitution: At the substitution level, Screencastify can replace traditional in-person demonstrations or explanations. Instead of explaining a concept on a whiteboard, teachers can create screencasts to explain the same content, providing a resource that students can revisit as needed.

Augmentation: For augmentation, Screencastify enhances traditional methods by allowing teachers to add annotations, highlight important information, and incorporate multimedia elements into their recordings. This makes explanations clearer and more engaging.

Modification: Screencastify modifies traditional assignments by enabling students to create their own screencasts. For example, students can record their presentations, conduct virtual labs, or demonstrate problem-solving processes. This encourages students to articulate their understanding and practice presentation skills.

Redefinition: At the redefinition level, Screencastify allows for the creation of entirely new tasks that were previously inconceivable. Students can collaborate on video projects, provide peer feedback through recorded comments, or create comprehensive video portfolios that showcase their learning journey. These activities leverage the power of video to create richer, more interactive learning experiences.

Ways for Using Screencastify in the Classroom

  • Use Screencastify to create lecture videos that students can watch at home, freeing up class time for interactive activities.
  • Have students create tutorial videos on topics they have mastered, reinforcing their learning and providing resources for their peers.
  • Provide personalized feedback on assignments by recording your screen and discussing student work.
  • Encourage students to create digital stories or documentaries, integrating various multimedia elements.
  • Use Screencastify to record and share professional development sessions with colleagues.
