Subject/Grade: Mathematics/1
Lesson Title: Learning to Skip Count by 2’s
|
Stage 1: Identify Desired Results
|
Outcome(s)/Indicator(s):
N1.1 – Say the number sequence, 0 to 100, by:
- 1s forward and backward between any two given numbers
- 2s to 20, forward starting at 0
- 5s and 10s to 100, forward starting at 0.
(e) Skip count by 2s to 20 starting at 0.
(h) Identify and correct errors and omissions in a number sequence. |
Key Understandings: (‘I Can’ statements)
- I can skip count by 2s from 0 to 20.
- I understand that skip counting saves time when counting.
- I can identify and correct errors in a number sequence.
- I understand that skip counting means saying only some numbers.
|
Essential or Key Questions:
- Why are there different ways to count?
- What do patterns and numbers have to do with each other?
- How can I count and why do I count?
- What is skip counting and why would I do it?
|
Prerequisite Learning:
- Counting by 1s: Students should be able to confidently count by 1s both forward and backward
- Basic Number Sense: Students should have a basic understanding of numbers and their order
- Patterns: A basic understanding of patterns may be helpful. Students should recognize simple patterns in numbers, such as the alternating pattern in even numbers
|
Instructional Strategies:
- Interactive Videos
- Real-Life Connections
- Class Discussion
- Independent Work (with teacher guidance)
|
Stage 2: Determine Evidence for Assessing Learning
|
I will utilize an Assessment Checklist during my lesson to gauge student understanding. I will also check each student’s worksheet before they are allowed to move onto the next worksheet. If a worksheet is not correct, the student will be sent back to their desk to correct their mistakes. |
Stage 3: Build Learning Plan
|
Set (Engagement): Length of Time: 20 minutes
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsUPVERZFlI (Wiggle Dance)
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jp7B7CEqRYk (Let’s Unwind)
- Begin the class by asking for a student to volunteer to count how many people are in the classroom at the moment.
- Hopefully the student will count the people by 1s
- Then prompt the students to think of another way they might go about counting, hoping they suggest counting by 2s
- If the students don’t suggest counting by 2s, the teacher will suggest it to them
- Now ask the students to skip count by 2s all together
- Now begin a class discussion about which method of counting was faster
- Invite the students to share other times in their lives when they experienced skip counting by 2s (ex. field trips, class attendance, sports, etc.)
Development: Length of Time: 20 minutes
- https://youtu.be/IdBiKfL3tOc (Counting by 2s Chant)
- Handout the Counting by 2s to 20 sheet
- Project the Hundreds Chart on the whiteboard
- Once a student finishes the Counting by 2s to 20 sheet, they can bring it to the C Table to get checked. If their sheet is correct, they will be given a Skip Counting by 2s sheet to complete.
- Once a student completes the Skip Counting by 2s sheet, they will be given another Skip Counting by 2s sheet
- If a student finishes all of these sheets, they will be asked to complete the Fill in to 20 sheet.
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_oGjWyBAvY (Jump Battle)
- After 10 minutes, or once students become wiggly, I will play the Jump Battle as a brain break
Learning Closure: Length of Time: 5 minutes
- Students will be asked to put their pencils away, and pile all of their worksheets in the center of their tables.
- https://youtu.be/IdBiKfL3tOc (Counting by 2s Chant)
- Listen to the Counting by 2s song again, to reinforce to students how to count by 2s up to 20

Materials/Resources:
Possible Adaptations/Differentiation:
- Provide additional support or alternative activities for students struggling with the concept
- Offer more challenging worksheets or activities for those who grasp the concept quickly
- Allow the students to work through the worksheets at their own pace
Management Strategies:
- 1-2-3 Eyes on Me
- Clearly communicate expectations for worksheet completion and checks
- Use positive reinforcement to encourage participation and completion of tasks
Safety Considerations:
- Ensure that physical activities are conducted safely
