Day One: The Beginning of Assessment & Evaluation
Today was the first ECS 401 class and needless to say, it was super exciting! Personally, I love learning about assessment and evaluation in the classroom because it is such an important aspect of teaching.
Today, we began the class by answering some questions on Poll Guru. I actually have never heard of this website before, but it was a great tool to put to use. As we filled out the questions, I was surprised to see that there were students in my class planning to teach high school. Since I am in the Pre-K to 5 program, I get quite used to my classmates wanting to teach in the early years.
After this, we did an assessment with Ty the T-REX. I loved how interactive this assessment was because it made the work of typing out my responses way more manageable. I got my email with all of my responses to the assessment, which can be viewed in the images to the right.
Following this, we had a short break and then began the next section of the class with breakout rooms. We were able to discuss the syllabus and the assignments that were included in this course. It was quite useful to be able to discuss the assignments with my classmates and work through some of our questions before asking the professor.
Excitingly enough, we got to do five quizzes about ourselves in regards to assessment and evaluation. Well, we were shown the quizzes and how to access them. Since these are to be completed after class, you can click this link here to view the blog post about my first taking the five quizzes. Fun fact, I added photos to that blog post using the snipping tool, which I learned about today in class.
We even did more Poll Guru after our second break which was in regards to assessment. Here are some of the class results. The first image displays my classmates’ comfort level when it comes to assessing and evaluating as a teacher. I was quite surprised to see that the four out of ten stars was the most common answer for my classmates. In addition, nobody had ten out of ten stars as an answer, which is quite reassuring because that means everyone will be engaged and learn even more about assessing and evaluating.
To finish off class today, we got to fill out a sheet about our own multiple intelligence. For me, I seemed to be the strongest in the logical/mathematical category with 34 points. This makes complete sense to me because of the thought process that I go through and because of my constant organization within life. The next closest category, at 31 points, was body/kinesthetic, which surprised me quite a lot since I did not think this category would be so high. The lowest category, at 20 points, was musical. Honestly, this is not too long of a score, but I am not surprised that it is the lowest. While I did figure skate and have a sense of rhythm, there are definitely aspects of this category that I do not align with. In the photos attached, you can see my results in my multiple intelligence graph. As well, you are able to see my results in comparison to the classes’ average for each category!
