One Great Thing

Science

The science lesson plan will be relating to the SE1.1 outcome which is to “investigate characteristics of the five traditional external senses (i.e., sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste) in humans and animals” (Ministry of Education, 2011, p. 26). In this lesson, a variety of flowers will be gathered and placed in the front of the classroom. The students will individually get a chance to examine each flower by passing one kind of a flower around the classroom at a time. As the students examine the flower, they will brainstorm with the teacher the way it smells, looks, feels, and perhaps if there is any sound. After the teacher has written on the whiteboard how each type of flower looks, smells, feels, and sounds, a comparison will occur. The students and teacher will use a Venn diagram and write down any similarities and differences between the flowers. Then, the students will pick which flower was their favourite and draw a representation of it on a piece of paper. Or, the students will draw a flower on the paper with combined characteristics based on the flowers that were examined and create their dream flower. Some learning resources used in this lesson will be the Venn diagram, hands-on work, group work, visualizing, and illustrating.
