Autobiographical Essay

Teachers hold a great responsibly and power. They help shape the minds of our future generations. I have always loved helping and spending time with younger kids, and I knew I would eventually want to make a career out of it. My mom, past teachers and my volunteer experiences have all contributed to my work ethic and desire to become a teacher.

I grew up in a household with my mom, dad, and sister and we had the “perfect family”, but when I was in grade five things changed drastically. My dad had an affair with someone from work, and that forever changed the relationship I have with him. My mom, sister, and I became so close and I genuinely do not know what I would do without them, they are my best friends. My mom is the biggest influence in my life, and she continuously teaches me every day to be a strong independent woman and to never give up. When my dad first left, my mom went back to school to get a higher education so she could better support our family. She has always preached to my sister and I that getting an education to support yourself is not optional it is mandatory, which I now understand because life can change in a matter of seconds. My mom has been there for me no matter what, and has always put my sister and I first. She is the strongest woman I know; she has been through so much in life but still has a positive attitude and the drive to keep going. I hope to be just like her one day and be able to be that light in the classroom for all my students.

My teachers have played a huge roll in my life, and some of them are the main reason I wanted to become a teacher. I was so heavily influenced by my kindergarten/ grade two teacher, she was someone who made school so fun and provided such a safe environment for all kids to learn. I now see and believe that it is a crucial role in a child wanting to come to school and learn. We, as teachers, have to make all students feel safe, included, and welcome to share their opinions and let them know they are loved and have a purpose. I also had three high school teachers that made me want to become a teacher. I had formed such close bonds with them and it made me realize that those relationships they form with students can be so important to the success some kids have in school. Seeing the day-to-day interactions these teachers had with students made me realize that I want to be just like them one day. I want to teach the next generation and make sure they succeed. I want to educate them on Canada’s history so they are informed of what events lead up to where we are today because I think that is so important.

One of the things people always say is that it takes a village to raise a child. Besides parents or guardians, many other people like family members, friends, people in the community, and teachers contribute to the up bringing of a child. Teachers are a fundamental part of a child and teenagers up bringing, they are the ones that teach and support them, they make sure that a child grasps on to the information they are being taught. Although my past teachers are the main reason I wanted to become a teacher, another reason was due to my volunteer experiences I have had over the years. I volunteered at the church by my house for the last seven years as an assistant youth group leader. This provided me with the experience of working with kids for a week straight in the summer. It was such a good learning experience due to the fact that I was in charge of caring for these kids while their parents were at work. I ensured that the children were having a fun time and learning lots, while in a safe environment. It gave me a lot of responsibility and provided me with a lot of skills that will help me when I become a teacher. I found the love for helping and caring for kids at a young age and knew that eventually I would want to make a career out of it.

Throughout my life I have experienced a lot of ups and downs but with the support of my family, friends and teachers I know I can get through and accomplish anything. I have wanted to be a teacher since I was five years old, and I cannot wait to bring my positive attitude and new views to the classroom. I will continue educating myself so I can be the best teacher. I am looking forward to this next chapter of my life with excitement and an eagerness to learn.
