How does Kumashiro define ‘commonsense?’ Why is it so important to pay attention to the ‘commonsense’? What commonsense understandings of curriculum and pedagogy do you bring with you into this course?

Kumashiro defines ‘commonsense’ as “the facets of life that many take for granted” or “what everyone should know.”

It is important to pay attention to commonsense because it in some cases, our idea of ‘commonsense’ comes from oppressive ideals. These instances of commonsense can indirectly become instances of racism, sexism, classism, etc.

Commonsense understandings of curriculum and pedagogy that I bring with me are:

  • That the curriculum is a non-negotiable mandate from the government on what to teach students.
  • Traditionally, school runs from the morning until mid-afternoon
  • While school may have a traditional setting of a classroom and have a traditional form of teaching (lecture and notes), many may learn differently and may have different environments and styles in which they learn best
