“Indian street food”
Living thousands of miles away from the home, made me interested in cooking at this age. I still remember when my mom used to advise me to learn how to cook, and I being busy with studies and sports never really showed any interest. Indian food is very diverse and delicious; therefore it is hard to resist the cravings. I have been living in India since my birth and my favorite food type is “street food”, it is not a type of cuisine but it is a comfort food you can find on small food stalls, more like starters. I remember going out with my friends to enjoy Aloo Tikki and Mango shake. So this week I tried my hands on these two.
Aloo Tikki translated in English would be called potato patties. Which are served with dipping or chickpea curry. These patties are made with boiled potatoes mashed and mixed with Indian herbs and spices. Once the dough is ready it is shaped round and flat and then shallow fried. I tried it with the chickpea curry and followed the recipe provided under the following link-

I garnished it with carrots and yogurt and it turned out to be very yummy and this is how it looked like-
The other food I tried is a basically mango shake, which is actually world famous. But because India has more than 1000 varieties of mangoes so that makes it different from around the world. I kind of found those big fat Mexican mangoes at a grocery store and tried making this shake with them. Three simple ingredients put together (milk, mango and ice) and this sweet treat was ready. I garnished it with crushed pistachios and it was soul satisfying. The image shows how it looked like and followed the You Tube status link provider https://www.youtube.com/shorts/F_wFw5r0R9M.
Wow, Babbandeep! I am so glad that you included pictures because those dishes look absolutely delicious!
I think it is great that you are learning to cook Indian street food! Your finished products look delicious! I had no idea that there were so many types of mangoes in the world. I love the memories that are associated with comfort food. My mom tried to teach me to cook when I was young as well but, like you, I didn’t have much interest. Now that I am older, I wish that I had the ability to make some of those foods that helped create such great memories!
What a great way to reconnect with home! Food has always been a thing that connects my family and I to our culture, so it made me smile that this was a way for you to connect to home and your childhood memories. How did your recipes compare to the ones that you remember? Do you think any restaurants around here do Indian Street Food justice?
Thanks for sharing and I can’t wait to see what else you cook up!
Your post makes me want to try Indian street food even more! I’ve always been curious about the flavors and textures, and Aloo Tikki with chickpea curry sounds absolutely delicious. The way you described the crispy, spiced potato patties has me intrigued, and that mango shake sounds like the perfect sweet treat. It’s awesome that you’re recreating these dishes at home—I might have to give them a try myself someday! Looking forward to seeing what you make next!
Karissa 🙂
This looks delicious! I love how you describe the mango shake as “soul satisfying,” because that’s what food can do for us. It must bring back great memories to enjoy the food that you have been missing 🙂
Of these two recipes, which do you think you’ll be returning to soon? I’m tempted to try the mango shake myself!
Thanks for sharing
Hello Babbandeep, thanks for your post.
Your really did well on giving a detailed information on how Tikki is prepared. I am sure the chickpea curry gave it some unique flavor because I know Indian spices are really flavorful. The link you added is really helpful as it will help foodies like myself to try it lol.
the mango shake looks soo yummy and the use of crushed Pistachios for the garnish depicts your creativity in cooking.
one suggestion you may consider is throwing some light on the experience of cooking. was it easy, fun, challenging or time consuming?
