I plan and have always wanted to introduce my students to technology, since you know I have a computer science degree. I also know that the digital world isn’t safe, well it’s not safe if you don’t know how to navigate it to be exact. I want to make sure my students know how to responsibly, safely, and ethically use the internet.
Nine Elements:

- Digital access: I will make sure my students have equal access to the internet and/or students without access to technology outside of school have enough time in school or offer them tools that can help with access.
- Digital Commerce: I will ensure my students understand the aspects of digital licenses, online shopping, and also stocks.
- Digital Communication and Collaboration: I will help students understand the importance of respect and responsibility when talking to other people behind a screen and also the importance of not trusting everyone online.
- Digital Etiquette: This aligns with the previous one, I will make sure students understand the impacts of cyberbullying.
- Digital Fluency: I will ensure my students are learning through diverse ways to show them diverse ways to interact with the digital world in hopes of helping them become more fluent.
- Digital Health and Welfare: With so much entertainment from being online, kids can become a little too attached. I believe it will be important in teaching kids balance, and teaching them that offline is better for their health.
- Digital Law: I will ensure my students know the basics of what’s legal online (digital licences to digital products, and how they can lose access if the issuer deems it necessary) and illegal online (sexting, sharing stuff that doesn’t belong to them)
- Digital Rights and Responsibility: I will ensure my students understand that they are responsible for what they share, post, and look up, and also their digital rights.
- Digital Security and Privacy: I will ensure my students understand how digital security and privacy works, how they can keep themselves safe from viruses, malware, and adware. As hackers and scammers are very common.
I believe following those nine elements will be beneficial to me in teaching my students online use.
This following video by CBC Kids will be a great way to grab kids’ attention when discussing this topic in our future classrooms.
I love how you acknowledge that not every student will have access to the same resources as other students outside of school. Allowing time for projects during school hours and not expecting students to do it at home allows all the children equity toward success.
I enjoyed reading your post as it was evident that you understand the nine elements of digital citizenship and that you have put quite a bit of thought into how to incorporate these into your classroom. Your passion for technology and teaching are both shown in your response! Also, I love the video you found and included. That is a great resource to show students when trying to first introduce the idea of digital citizenship!
