01- Honor Their Names
After reading the article “Honor their Names” I realized how common this was in my junior high school. Some of my teachers would give students nicknames or other names because it was “easier” than pronouncing their actual name. I also remember not agreeing with it but never really understanding why. After reading the article I also realized by doing this devalues them and takes them away from their families, language, and cultures.
By providing alternatives for students like prizes or treats, it creates a more inclusive environment in the classroom and acknowledges cultures and religious beliefs. It is a way of knowing your students and who they are.
Create a safe space at school. Make your students feel welcomed and safe by acknowledging who they are, what languages they speak, what culture they are, etc. Make a genuine relationship with each student.
02- How to be an anti-racist teacher in a mostly white school
“My silence is helping perpetuate racism.” (4:39, Coe). This quote stuck with me because sometimes being silent can come as being “the easier” route. It actually just makes things worse. Taking action and changing societal norms in the school are necessary and sitting back and doing nothing is not helping students of colour.
