Continuing off our conversation of last week I really got to thinking, “How does our digital footprint begin? When does it begin?” This got me thinking about my year and a half old daughter and what her digital footprint may already look!
I started by doing a quick google search of her name, which came up with a lot of people with the same name who are most definitely not her. This didn’t surprise me that I would have to dive a little deeper by including our location. Adding our location brought up relatives of Gracyn at first as well as some people with the same first or last name. Then up came the posts either myself or my family had posted! This was something I did not expect considering we do not have the same last name! Even wilder was when I continued to scroll and found posts my dad had made! He and Gracyn do not share a last name either and her last name was no where to be found on the post.
So, I found my little one already has an online identity starting to form and she has not even turned 2 yet! I will be very interested to learn and see how her identity online grows as she ages and how the little bit I post online has already started to form an identity for her online. Is this a good thing? Is she too young to have anything online? At this point I am really unsure of where I stand! There isn’t anything damaging online of her and yet she seems too young to even have an online identity at all!
What are your thoughts on what age having an online identity should begin? Let me know in the comments!
Until next week,
