Truth & Reconciliation

On Tuesday afternoon I had the privilege to enter Preeceville school for our first day of practicum. I was greeted by great staff and warm students excited to see a new face around the school. This experience was especially great for me as it was the first time I got to be a part of the school culture my significant other grew up in. I have lived in Preeceville now for 2 years and dream of one day being a teacher within this school! This week we were asked the question, “Based on your observations, interactions, and/or connections in the field, how are teachers honouring Indigenous knowledge, perspectives, and the Truth & Reconciliation Calls to Action?” Based upon my half a day in the classroom, I was unable to spot any Indigenous literature or bulletin boards due to the nature of the classes I was in for that afternoon. My afternoon consisted of a grade 6 math class, recess with grade 2, and ending with getting Kindergarten ready for the bus to go home. After the students had left, I had the opportunity to discuss truth and reconciliation with staff members who told me about the month of September at the school. Throughout the entire month of September, the school puts a highlight on Truth and Reconciliation with literature in class, assemblies, bulletin boards and an Orange Shirt Day to name a few. Below I have included a photo from the Preeceville School public Facebook page that highlights some students in orange shirts as well as a caption detailing the “orange shirt day.” While I think it is great to have a month to highlight truth and reconciliation, I wonder how this could be incorporated into classes all throughout the year for students and staff.
