Michael Wesch posted a video on YouTube sixteen years ago discussing the new culture of participation. It is crazy to think of the difference technology has made since then and how Wesch’s topic is still so relevant. He talks about how the invention of YouTube led to a revolution in how we communicated with each other and the connections we made worldwide. This new culture is fantastic for inclusion and being able to learn and connect with those across the world. In the classroom, these connections can lead to a greater understanding of topics and a better sense of self for our students. I think to balance this and promote connections within the classroom would be to promote online connections throughout the peer group in the classroom. Promoting these connections means we encourage the kids to pursue these online resources and make connections while under the guidance of a teacher. While there are definitely downsides to technology- I feel like introducing these resources within a classroom opens up conversation in a safe space! According to an article written by Sumarie Roodt and Dominic Peter highlights the generation of students and technology. https://www.learntechlib.org/p/114708/proceedings_114708.pdf
This article is a good starting point for teachers to understand the mindset of this generation towards technology and a guide for how to teach in a productive way.
Our students are going to use technology whether we allow it or not! It’s better for us to be on the offence and teach these students how to use it as a productive skill!
Hi Brianna, I agree that it is crazy to see how different technology is from 20 years ago. I also think it is in our best interest and our students to teach them how to safely use technology rather than trying to ban it.
