Digital citizenship in the classroom is a key factor when it comes to preparing our students for the world outside of school. More than ever students are already exposed to “the adult world” earlier than before as they now have access to everything adults do all at the click of a button. Because of this, it was more important now than ever that we in-still proper etiquette online at a young age. The article“The IRL Fetish” written by Nathan Jorgensen has a unique take on the online world as well as our lives off line that I think would be a great piece to bring forward to middle or high school students.
This article can be used as a tool to look through the scope of the Nine Elements of Digital Citizenship. After discussing each of the nine elements in detail for students to understand each one- students would read the article by Nathan Jorgensen and then individually come up with ideas as to how we use technology and how it affects our lives under each of the nine elements. We then would come together as a class to discuss everyone’s ideas on each of the nine elements of digital citizenship as well as how they felt about the article as a whole.
By leaving the assignment and discussion fairly open ended students wouldn’t feel like there is a right or wrong answer. This would help the discussion along as we would get the real opinions of students whether they lean towards implementing technology into every area of our lives, or if they would rather shy away.
