You Are My Sunshine

When putting my daughter to sleep I find I always come back to the lullaby “You are my Sunshine.” So when I decided this week I wanted to learn a song in ASL, this was the most obvious choice.

This learning experience has been heavily inspired by my daughter Gracyn and so it felt only right to learn a song that I sing to her on a daily basis in ASL. I took to TikTok once again to learn this song. I love the length of videos on TikTok as they are to the point and easily accessible to watch multiple times! I stumbled upon a video by Funtown Playground. Their TikTok page is a mixture of topics but by searching directly for this song in ASL I was able to find the video fairly quickly!

This song was super quick to learn and only took me a matter of hours to master this song! TikTok has been my favourite resource to learn ASL so far as with a busy schedule it is much easier to fit in a few short videos as compared to a long YouTube video or a book.

I love that TikTok is a platform that can provide people with the videos that they need to learn something in a more condensed way! I know I go to TikTok often for some quick how to’s!

  3. Hey Brianna! My mom used to sing this to me every night too and she can also communicate using ASL so your post reminded me a lot of her. It is so special that you were able to learn a song that means so much to you and your daughter. Thanks for sharing this!

  5. I used to sing that song to my kids when they were little too and then to daycare kids in later years. I love that you learned a song to sign with her, maybe one day she’ll learn the signs for it as well.
