November 2nd, 2021-White resentment in settler society

When reading the White resentment in settler society document, I learned how beneficial it would be to have the treaty resource kit in my classroom. The kit is so important to have in a classroom as it supports the learning of treaty education in a way that is accurate as it includes the perspectives of the people that lived through that point in time. Having this kit in the classroom would also support the anti-racist classroom theory as “In the context of anti-racist theory, teaching about the culture and history of a people may be the least political and least assertive type of curricular knowledge” (White resentment in settler society, pg.90)

October 7th,2021 ,Adaptive Demension:

When reading the Adaptive Dimension document, I learned some great information. One thing that I really took to was “The Adaptive Dimension recognizes that students approach learning in multiple ways. Teachers need to actively respond to the strengths and needs of individual students. All students can learn and achieve as a result of effective assessment, planning and instruction.”(Adaptive Dimension 2017, pg.3). This to me really reigns true as all students learn completely differently and having those supports available for students is crucial for their success in learning. When reading the document I came across a sentence that really stuck with me,” Teachers building strong, healthy relationships with students is an essential dynamic in students’
engagement and their ability to achieve success.”(Adaptive Dimension 2021, pg. 5). This is completely and utterly true if a teacher does not have a healthy relationship with her/his students they will not be able to fully get to know their students and their strengths and difficulties they might be having. In my classroom, I want to base my classroom around group discussions as I feel having those meaningful discussions help students fully absorb the learning I am trying to teach them. This was mentioned in one of the ways of adaptive learning”Offer students more time to respond orally, read passages and complete learning tasks”.(Adaptive Dimension 2017,pg.11).

Two Questions I have?

How do you become engaged in your student’s life without getting to a point of not remaining an authority figure?

How can you tell what is a good adaptive resource?

One thing I enjoyed: A quote I really enjoyed was “Engaged students want to come to school and look forward to learning” (Adaptive Dimension 2017, pg.5). Engaged students are successful students and they look forward to learning if they are interested in what they are learning.

October 5th, 2021-Inclusive Education

When reading the Inclusive Education document I took some pretty significant information with me such as the meaning of Inclusion. Inclusion is such a broad spectrum and is defined by “Inclusion is an attitude, a belief and an approach that supports a commitment to welcome, accept, value and educate every individual as a contributing member of the school community.”(Inclusive Education 2017, pg.2). The Document talks about inclusive education and how “Embracing the belief that students are parts of an evolving society that believes all individuals belong in and are valued members of a diverse society”(Inclusive Education 2017, Pg.2). This is extremely important in the classroom as if you are not supporting all your student’s beliefs/ways of life they will not feel comfortable learning in that environment. A final takeaway from the document was “Senior and school-based administrators play a critical role in creating a vision that provides a foundation of attitudes, beliefs and approaches for inclusive educational practices and experiences in schools and classrooms.”(Inclusive Education 2017, pg.3). Support from the admin is crucial as one teacher can not make a classroom inclusive without support from his or her coworkers. Getting support from your peers can promote inclusivity throughout the whole school.

Two questions I have?:

*If you are getting push back from parents about an inclusive classroom what can we do as teachers?

*When it comes to some inclusive topics it might be inappropriate for us as a teacher to give the information, is there someone we can turn to to help us guide through the topic appropriately?

One thing I enjoyed: I really enjoyed the quote “Classrooms are the only places where all children of a community come together to make their future friends and acquaintances …” (Inclusive Education 2017, pg.4). A classroom is where students can connect with each other and create line long friendships.
