Prepare, Prepare, Prepare pt.3- Kitchen Cleanliness
If you have been following along on my journey I am currently trying to prepare for my last item I am wanting to try to cook. It will be my first time ever making a Portuguese style spatchcock chicken so I am trying to prepare myself for all that is involved with it. My last post I talked about how important using a knife properly was along with how to spatchcock a chicken properly. This post since I will be working with raw meat, I don’t want cross contamination to happen in my kitchen so I want to be prepared on how to work with utensils that have been in contact with raw meat. Like most of my learning project posts I have been turning to Youtube, it is just the best platform to learn things from!
This first video shared 3 tips on how to handle raw chicken when you are prepping to cook it.
Two things that I took from this video was not washing the chicken before you’re prepping it and always marinating your chicken in the fridge. The not washing your chicken was surprising to me because I have been around people that have washed their chicken prior to cooking it so it came as a shock. I had a roommate from Belize and I remember asking him why he washed his chicken before he cooked it. He said that it was important to clean it because of the bacteria that was on it. I think I may have to research this further to decide if I should or shouldn’t wash my chicken prior to cooking it. The second was to marinate the chicken in the fridge. I think this tip will help me because I will be marinating my chicken before I cook it, I don’t think I would have left it out to marinate but I thought it was helpful that she mentioned that.
The other video was a short video on washing knives in between uses.
This video was relatively basic but offered some good points on sanitizing your knife between uses.
The last video I am posting is a video from Kitchen Nightmares on the consequences of not handling your meat properly or keeping your kitchen clean.
Seeing the dark side of what an unclean kitchen makes me even more want to make sure that I properly clean and prepare my chicken both before and after.
