Land Acknowledgements from my Two Residences
-
The City of Weyburn recognizes that we are on Treaty 4 land, the traditional home of the Cree, Ojibwe, Saulteaux, Dakota, Nakota, Lakota and the homeland of the Métis. The goal of Truth and Reconciliation is better understanding and better relations with our First Nations communities.
- The City of Regina acknowledges we are on the traditional lands of the Treaty 4 Territory, a Treaty signed with 35 First Nations across Southern Saskatchewan and parts of Alberta and Manitoba, and the original lands of the Cree, Saulteaux, Dakota, Nakota, Lakota, and the homeland of the Métis. The City of Regina owes its strength and vibrancy to these lands and the diverse Indigenous Peoples whose ancestors’ footsteps have marked this territory as well as settlers from around the world who continue to be welcomed here and call Regina home.
Truth and Reconciliation Aesthetic Representation
- In my ECS 101-397 class, we had a project essay and representation for our journey to Truth and Reconciliation. For my representation of my paper on my journey, I decided to make a sketch note on two of the resources I used.
My representation has a tipi in the center. This is inspired by Cree Elder Mary Lee’s Tipi Teachings. She describes the 15 poles a tipi is made up of, and that a person needs to be connected with all the poles teachings in order to complete their tipi. The teachings are respect, obedience, humility, happiness, love, faith, kinship, cleanliness, thankfulness, sharing, strength, child-rearing, hope, protection, and control. In my representation, I have began to form a tipi with the poles I feel connected to. Scattered below are the poles I have not connected to, and show where I am moving forward in my journey to achieve.
The animals surrounding the tipi are from the Grandfather Teachings. Dave Courchene shares the 7 Sacred Animals and their meanings. The meanings of the animals are respect (buffalo), love (eagle), courage (bear), honesty (bigfoot), wisdom (beaver), humility (wolf) and truth (turtle). I believe it is important to recognize these animals and their meanings because it is symbolic of how everything has a deeper meaning. We need to respect all beings and acknowledge what they represent.
