Assessments

Diagnostic Assessments:

During my internship, I aimed to assess students’ prior knowledge of each unit we were going to explore. Doing so allowed me to design my unit in a way that best facilitates where the class’s understanding/knowledge is on a specific topic. Some examples of these diagnostic assessments:

  • Pre-test in math
  • asking questions about the unit to the class as a whole
  • partner work
Formative Assessments:

Formative assessments occurred each day and in each unit. I used formative assessment to examine how students are progressing in the unit and determine whether we need more practice or experience on something or if we are comfortable moving on. Some examples of formative assessment used:

  • Observing the students during work periods
  • correcting and reviewing students’ worksheets
  • listening to answers to questions and conversations
Summative Assessments

Throughout my internship, I would give summative assessments around two or three times during a unit. Doing a summative assessment halfway through a unit allowed me to adjust the unit and see how much the students have grasped at different points of the unit. Some examples of summative assessments:

  • Tests
  • open-ended projects  (such as building a structure that can hold a load)
  • partner projects (role-playing)
