The Debate Around Cellphone Bans in Schools
As technology becomes an integral part of daily life, the conversation about cellphone use in schools grows more complex. Cellphones offer incredible benefits, but their misuse can also lead to significant challenges. I’ve examined both sides of the debate and explored how I might balance the positives with the negatives.
I’d like to note – I found Michael Horn’s Ban the Cellphone Ban particularly intriguing to read and would recommend it. It is a short read, peer-reviewed, and is also available on the University of Regina online library. The hyperlinked version has links to studies that are also worth reading.
Pros of Student Cellphones in Schools | Cons of Student Cellphones in Schools |
– Technology resource accessibility: many students have cellphones and therefore, can have a vast array of educational apps and tools at their fingertips
– Communication: cellphones allow quick, immediate ways to communicate (text messages, calls, Edsby posts, etc.) – Music: I have noticed that many students stay on task and distract others less if they are listening to music during work periods |
– Distractions: students are more likely to focus on lessons and activities without the temptation of texting, social media, or games
– Improved mental health: limits exposure to social media, which can contribute to anxiety, depression, and feelings of inadequacy. – Bullying/inappropriate behaviour: cellphones can facilitate the sharing of fights, photos, and hurtful comments – Decreased social interactions: social media and texting have replaced many in-person connections |
I believe that banning cellphones outright is not the best solution. Instead, schools should be teaching students how to use technology responsibly and to its full potential. A great way to tackle this would be to implement mandatory classes that inform students on:
- How cellphones impact mental health, focus, engagement, learning, and social interactions
- How cellphones can be used to benefit learning
I agree that an outright ban on cellphones is not the best solution for students or teachers. I think there needs to be some compromise and flexibility. In addition to mandatory classes for students, I would like to see mandatory training for teachers on how to manage technology in the classroom and also how to leverage the technology to further their students’ learning.
Hi Carol,
Yes! I totally agree that mandatory training/classes all around would be so helpful for everyone. I think it would be a good idea to get parents involved in some training/information sessions, as well.
