First Set Success!
Hi everyone!
I’m so excited to share that my gel nail polish kit finally arrived, and I did my first simple set this past weekend!! To get started, I used this helpful Youtube tutorial by Amanda Bellantoni. It was incredibly informative and easy to follow.
The key points I picked up from her video are:
- Prep the nails well by pushing back cuticles and buffing the nail bed so that the polish has something to “stick” to. I found that at the salon, they used an electric Dremel to buff the nails which, over time, is quite damaging to the nail bed. I much prefer buffing them myself with a lightweight nail file. I’m hoping that this causes less damage over time. 😊
- Apply thin coats of base coat, colour, and top coat. This will lessen the likelihood of peeling polish.
- When applying the top coat, seal the tips. This will also lessen the likelihood of peeling and chipping.
Surprisingly, painting with my non-dominant hand wasn’t as challenging as I expected! Since you have to go slow and be meticulous no matter what, it made the process easier to manage.
Here’s a photo of the completed set! I used a nude colour in case I experience some chipping. But, I will keep everyone posted on how it holds up! 😊
Wow! These look amazing. Do. you have an idea what your next set will be?
Thank you! And oh boy – I have so many options to choose from! The kit came with 40 colours, so I will probably just try another colour. But, I found a bunch of tutorials and have ordered a couple extra things:
– blooming polish which creates distortion
– chrome powder which makes the colour metallic
– cat eye polish to make it look almost shiny/bubbly/3D
– a cheap eyeshadow palette to create a tie-dye pattern
Wow, This looks beautiful, and can you please send me the name of the online site and app where you got the nail polish kit?
I would wait to get the kit until it is on sale, as it happens often! Thank you
I love the natural look of that colour! Its a beautiful choice! I follow an account that does dos and don’ts of gel polish because a few years ago a friend of mine got a kit and she was teaching herself how to do what you’re doing. You should check it out! It’s called “”beetlesgelpolish” on Instagram. It could be helpful to your project in the future! Who knows!
Thanks, Shasta! And thank you for sending that account my way. I will definitely check it out! 🙂
These look great! I definitely can NOT do my dominate hand very well with normal nail polish so this is impressive to me! I look forward to seeing future designs – how long did this set last you?
– Kelsey
Hi Kelsey!
I am decent with regular nail polish, but I actually think gel polish is easier! If you ever get any in an undesired place, you just wipe it away before you cure it under the UV lamp 🙂
This set last two weeks (I will post a new blog with my next set soon). Honestly, I think it could have easily lasted me another week or so, but I needed to try a new idea for the class lol!
