My Teaching Philosophy
As a new teacher I learn more about and adjust my teaching philosophy all the time. I have learnt how important it is that people become lifelong learners, and which is why it is one of my objectives to foster this in my classroom. My teaching philosophy includes creating a safe, inclusive, and creative environment.
First, I feel that everyone should have access to an education. This means that no one gets left behind because of poverty, disability, or because of their identity. Schools should be inclusive to all groups of people and their cultures. It is my goal to always sustain a positive classroom environment.
I believe in greeting my students with a smile every morning so they can see that I am happy to be there with them and that this is a good place to be. A positive environment also means allowing students to be who they are without any negative feedback. I will always allow the use of different languages in my classroom, even if it is not the primary language of the school. Students should never have to feel like they have to hide who they are. Therefore, it is my hope to foster an environment where students will not only accept who they are, but also accept the differences that others have from themselves. This is all important to me because I believe being a student is one of the best places to develop and encourage lifelong learning.
I hope to help achieve creating lifelong learners by making learning interesting and fun, so that students want to continue learning even after school. To do this I plan to create relationships with my students and get to know them. In doing this I will learn the interests of my students; then I can include their interests in my daily lessons to connect with them and hopefully intrigue them. Along with their lifelong learning, I will also always foster my own. I plan to always be open to learning from my students, their families, and fellow teachers.
Each student learns differently and has different needs. As a teacher we need to be conscious of this and help create fair opportunities. We must be treating students equitably, meaning everyone is treated fairly but each student is not necessarily given the exact same amount of time for help. Some students who do not have the same opportunities or resources to learn may need more help than others. Knowing that students learn differently also means we might have to change up our teaching approaches, to meet the needs of every student and give them the best chance possible. This is important because if students feel neglected or discouraged, they could decide to give up on learning, which is a tragedy I would vote against.
This is my teaching philosophy, knowing fully well that this will change and adapt as I have more experiences in school as a teacher. I am sure the idea of having a safe, inclusive, positive, and creative environment will not stray too far from my stance now, however, other values and beliefs might become more apparent to me.
