The History of Sushi

Square

I had a bit of a frustrating week of learning this week. My plan was to start my journey to rolling sushi with the California roll. This roll was invented in North America (either California or British Columbia, depending on who you give credit to). To accomplish this I turned to youtube, and began doing my research. I watched two videos before deciding on the needed supplies. The video below was my favourite.

After doing my research I went to Amazon to order my sushi kit, and I pressed add to cart, and buy and it should have only been a few days, giving me time to tackle my California rolls on the weekend. Here is where my plans went awry. Somehow I hadn’t actually submitted my order. I kept looking for my sushi kit to arrive, and when I finally looked at the app my order wasn’t showing up. I quickly ordered again, but now my kit wasn’t going to get here until Wednesday, February 5th. With this delay I had to change course slightly. I decided to do a bit more background research on the history of sushi making. For example, we owe our love of sushi to Japanese chefs in California who introduced North Americanized versions of traditional sushi to smooth our conversion to more adventurous dishes. Many of my favourite dishes aren’t actually traditional Japanese food, but instead their North American versions. The video below is a nice quick summary of what I found in my research.

As I was working on this post the Amazon truck arrived, and my sushi kit made it two days early! I am looking forward to starting in on California rolls next week. Stay tuned for my California Rolls.

  1. Hi Danine,
I have a very similar sushi maker – and I often give it out as a gift. Works great! Can’t wait to see your first creation. Sushi is my favourite 🀀
