My name is Desyrae Carstensen but most people call me Dez, my pronouns are she/her. I am an open book and I hope as my e-portfolio grows, that becomes clear. I live by two mottos: give out compliments like they are free because they are, and people are more than their mistakes. I’m known for giving compliments and I would say it’s a very important part of who I am. I want to make sure the people around me feel seen and valued. In my eyes, a big part of valuing people is to see the good in them and not dwell on shortcomings. I strive to live knowing as a whole I am no better or worse than any person on earth, while also seeing each situation through the eyes of equity.
My friends and family would describe me as justice orientated, honest, understanding, funny, and selfless. My parents raised me to be a person who takes action, works hard, and always helps those who need it. I genuinely cannot think of a career more fitting for me than being a teacher. Serving others and learning is what gives my life purpose. I look forward to being a positive role model and making a difference in the world one student at a time.
“What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
-Jane Goodall
Land Acknowledgment
I would like to acknowledge that I now live on Treaty 4 territory. Home of the Cree, Saulteaux, Dakota, Lakota, Nakota, Ojibwe, and Metis. I acknowledge the horrific acts of systematic oppression that have taken place on this land toward indigenous people. I commit to my part in reconciliation by creating open spaces to allow indigenous people to narrate their own stories and respect their truths, and teachings.
