Grade 5 Arts Education Remembrance Day Lesson

Content:

Students will be creating visual art projects that resemble poppies in honor of Remembrance Day. The lesson will begin with the class watching a video that teaches students about the meaning behind Remembrance Day. The pre-interns will then read the students the poem “In Flanders Field ”, as this is the poem being used in the project.  The students will then partake in a class discussion about how we can honor the soldiers that lost their lives while fighting for our country. The interns will then lead the class through the art project over the course of two days. The lesson will end by the students reflecting on their art pieces with a partner. 

 

Outcome:

CP 5.8 – Create artworks using a variety of visual art concepts (e.g., positive space), forms (e.g., graphic design, photography), and media (e.g., mixed media, paint).

Indicators:

(a) Use the elements of line, color, texture, shape, form, and space in ways that reflect a pop art style.

(f) Demonstrate ability to represent visual details to enhance depictions of plants, animals, people, and objects.

 

Prerequisite Learning:

 

  • Students need to know how to cut and paste
  • Students need to know how to be respectful and safe when using art supplies 
  • Students need to be able to recognize shapes (circles, squares, and rectangles)
  • Students need to know how to cut paper into the shape of squares and rectangles
  • Students need to know what a poppy looks like

 

Lesson Preparation

Equipment/Materials

  • White and  black paper
  • Flanders Field cut outs 
  • tinfoil
  • glue 
  • paint brushes 
  • cardboard 
  • red and black tissue paper 

 

Advanced Preparation

  • Have video explaining Remembrance Day loaded
  • Have cups of glue and paint brushes ready for students 

 

Presentation

Set: (15 min)

 

  • The lesson will begin with the class watching a video that explains the importance of remembrance day. This video will teach students about the meaning behind remembrance day, ideas of how to honor soldiers that lost their lives in the war, and it explain the connection between poppies and Remembrance Day. 
  • The interns will  read the students the poem “In Flanders Field” because students will be using this poem to create the background of their art project. 
  • The interns will lead a class discussion based on the video that was watched in class. The two prompts that the class will be discuss are:
    • What are some ways that we can honor the soldiers that lost their lives in the war this Remembrance Day?
    •  How are poppies connected to Remembrance Day?

Development: (30 min)

Day 1:

  • Students will gather their materials needed (black paper, white paper, Flanders Field cut outs, tin foil)
  • The students can cut out there poems, white paper, and tin foil to glue on their paper
  • They will begin to take the cut outs and start gluing their pieces onto their black piece of paper 
  • Remind students to take their time with gluing and cutting

Day 2: 

  • Students will grab their backgrounds from last class and will now start working on their poppies 
  • Remind students what poppies mean to remembrance day 
  • Students will grab a piece of cardboard to trace and cut out the shape of a poppy (there is no perfect shape) 
  • Once they have their poppy, demonstrate to the class how to create a ball of tissue paper to make their poppy pedals come to life (3D)
  • Get students to take their time with the tissue paper creating their pedals and the middle of the poppy
  • Once they are done the flower, ask them to glue it where they want onto their background piece and hand in to teacher for bulletin board

Closure: (15 min)

  • The lesson will end with the students pairing up with the person in the desk beside them and reflecting on their favorite aspect of their art piece. The students will also discuss what their favorite part of their partner’s art piece was. This should take approximately five minutes to complete. 
  • The students will then begin cleaning up their desks by putting all of their art supplies away and putting any scrap pieces of paper in the recycling bin. This should take approximately ten minutes to complete.
