My name is Emily Hanson. I am 19 years old, and I was born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan. I attended High school at Luther College High School, in Regina, as did my family members before me. I live with my mom and dad, along with my younger brother who I am very close with, who is in grade 12 at Luther. This is my second year at the University of Regina, however my first semester in Education. I was majoring in psychology before. I have worked at the YMCA for the past two and half years, and love it there. At the YMCA I work with kids, teaching them a different variety of skills in different classes. This has sparked my love for kids and teaching. Along with the YMCA, I work the weekends at the Cougars Hockey games. My mom is a teacher, and from time to time I come and help in her classroom. She was the one who suggested to me that I should switch the education. My goal is to finish my education degree and work as a teacher for awhile, then eventually get my masters in psychology, so I can become an Educational Psychologist. My hobbies/passions in life are painting, drawing, playing the drums, music, along with hanging out with family and friends, and travelling. My favourite place I have traveled to has been El Salvador. Ever since I left that beautiful country I have wanted to go back. I have always had a love of art and in my spare time, which is not a lot in university, I usually spend it drawing or painting. I have learned to play the piano, guitar, and I am now on the drums which I find is really what I am good at. Music is a big part of my life for I am always listening to it, and you can usually find me after work on the weekend at a concert, or one of my friends’ shows, that are in bands. Also three close friends of mine and I plan and put on a music event called Exposure, where we give a platform for local artist to perform. We have held two so far and are already in the early stages of planing another Exposure.

Read The World

Growing up as a child my upbringing was very positive. I grew up with a family who loved me, and who also taught me to love others. I was raised that I was never to judge people based on who they are, or where they come from. However I attended a very cathelic elementary school,…

The Struggles With Math

Growing up as a child I was never good at math. I struggled wrapping my head around the concepts and terms that we learned in math. My brain did not work in that sense and I have always been stronger in subjects such as english, and the arts. However a subject I was also strong…

Treaty Education

The purpose of teaching Treaty Ed is to educate students about their country’s history. Students need to learn the culture of the people who are Indigenous to the land they live on. It is also important to learn about how Inidgous peoples were treated and how they still are treated. This might not always be…

A Sense of Place

Creating a sense of place for one’s students is one of the most important concepts a teacher can have in the classroom. Creating a sense of place for students makes one classroom a safe welcoming place that students can express who they truly are. One of my “I believe statements” has always been that the…

Hip Hop In The Classroom

Growing up I was in many different styles of dance however hip hop was always the style of dance that I felt I had the most freedom in. Hip hop, unlike other styles of dance, has no real right way to do a movement, giving students a chance to explore what really works best for…

Review of the Curriculum

The curriculum is something that has been around for years, adapting and changing based on the generation needs and the viewpoints of society based on stereotypes. “Good Student”

Looking at commonsense more as a whole this week I looked at how commonsense has a factor in our society of what is considered to be a good student. In Kumashiro’s article “Preparing Teachers For Crisis: A Sample Lesson, What It Means To Be A Student” she begins the article talking about a situation that…

Art-Based Education

Arts-based education is often forgotten about in the curriculum. In many different schools around the world art is pushed aside or forgotten for the stereotype of one can not have a “real career” or one will go nowhere in life with art. This is why subjects that are seen as “more important” as math or…
