The concept I chose for my Critical Summary is the standardization of curriculum. I chose this topic because I feel as though it reflects my educational history and I think that many aspects of a standardized curriculum and framework for student education are negative and only serve to benefit teachers and government, rather than benefiting student learning.

Daniel Ian Rubin and Christopher John Kazanjian give an important insight into how standardized education and education as a product is harmful for not only students, but teachers as well.In their article ‘Just Another Brick in the Wall: Standardization and the Devaluing of Education’ they touch on how it squanders student creativity and individuality, and how it leans toward a eurocentric view of education. They state as well that it creates a sense of competition within schools to see who can come out on top, which reflects the state of the economy which is also considered a competition. This takes away from students actually wanting to learn and enjoying learning, their motivation coming instead from being better than others.
