Is Math the Most Unbiased Subject of them all?

Is Math the Most Unbiased Subject of them all?        School is a place with many feelings, experiences for many individuals.  The classroom and school environment means many different things to people.  Some individuals experience school with many glowingly positive experiences.  Whereas other students see it as a scary and anxious place.  Many experience school with a variety of emotions which change depending on the feelings they experience during different subject areas.  In other words, subject areas can have a great impact on a student’s likeness or dislike of the school and classroom environment.        A question that I have come across this week is were there aspects…

Multilingual Learners are Assets to any Classroom!

Multilingual Learners are Assets to any Classroom!      As a teacher I am all about being as inclusive to all my students as humanly possible.  In terms of multilingual learners and multilingual ideologies, the classroom is not an idea that is new to me.  Multilingualism to some teachers is a brand new concept and a struggle to include into the classroom as well. In other words, my intentions for this blog posts are to help educate those teachers who need ideas, strategies, policies and activities that can be integrated into the classroom for the well-being and inclusion of all students!        Simplest of ways to make all people…

    People Are People!

People are People!      Queering the curriculum and including all people in the walls of the classroom and school system is a topic of wild opinions.  Opinions that take on such malicious thoughts and opinions.  So when asked to answer this week’s prompt question it was a challenge.   As the prompt for this week mentions the question of ‘how might we address the ways in which the systems that we teach our curriculum in are intrinsically homophobic, transphobic, biphobic’ and countless other things?  Rather the better question to answer is why we are not already utilizing policies and strategies in the classroom to include and make all people…

Classrooms should have Feelings, Sounds and a certain Look for it’s Students?

Classrooms should have Feelings, Sounds and a certain Look for it’s Students?          As teachers we need to always be questioning factors such as what does a culturally relevant pedagogy and classroom look like?  Feel like?  Sound like?  When teachers consider how to have a more culturally relevant pedagogical forward classroom, breaking it up into these three sections has made it easy to understand what needs to be done to improve.        As a teacher I want my classroom to look like this? I want students to show signs of being understood, for who they are on the inside and out.  Each student should look like…

The Genre of Hip Hop Music Creating an Impact in the Education Curriculum?

The Genre of Hip Hop Music Creating an Impact in the Education Curriculum?        The genre of hip hop and its involvement in the education curriculum was never a topic I ever imagined I would discuss in my lifetime.  Now that I began my journey of diving through topics, outcomes and indicators of the curriculum.  It is so interesting discovering what is required of each grade level to understand and recall.  On top of those discoveries it is quite fascinating looking for different topics and themes that can be included in the education curriculum.        I will take the time to answer this question:  How can hip hop…

    Citizenship and Teaching are Connected?

Citizenship and Teaching are Connected?        As a born and raised Canadian citizen, I always had an understanding of what the definition of citizenship truly was.  My understanding was a citizen is an individual who resides in a certain location for a long period of time.  It also tends to be an individual who loves the country they are a part of.        Up until this week’s learning material:  I as a soon to be teacher was not aware that education, teaching and citizenship are as interlinked as they truly are.  Amidst the sad truth, I always knew that I wanted to be the type of teacher who…

Will the CURRENT Curriculum be the Curriculum FOREVER?

Will the CURRENT Curriculum be the Curriculum FOREVER?      If you are unaware or have limited knowledge on the term of curriculum.  Here are a couple definitions for you:  One, curriculum is the ‘bible of the education system.’  Or in simpler terms curriculum can be defined as the ‘meat and potatoes’ of the education system. Lastly in many educators’ minds it is the ‘backbone’ of any classroom.        Now to answer ‘according to Benjamin Levin’s opinion and knowledge, how is school curricula developed and implemented?’  Benjamin Levin is an educational advisor and scholar.  He is the man behind the curriculum.  He has had a huge effect on what…

What is the ‘Good and Ideal’ Student in the Eyes of Curriculum?

What is the ‘Good and Ideal’ Student in the Eyes of Curriculum?       Ideal and Good; two words I wished weren’t used in the curriculum, school systems and even the classroom.  Ideal when referring to kids tends to mean the perfect and well rounded students that teachers require all their class to be.  Good is another one of those words we as teachers should not use in the classroom.  Good means that all students are seen as great and can never do anything wrong.        The ‘ideal’ student we often describe in the school based curriculum and within our common sense tends to be an individual who struggles…

‘Jen Gilbert’s’ Influence on the Topic of Sexual Minorities in the Education System

Researching through a hefty list of influential scholars and educators was a difficult task.  As all people have their own intentions in life.  Teachers and educators have their own pedagogies, beliefs and opinions in the classroom.  So narrowing in on one individual was a challenge.        Ultimately I choose to take them to better understand educator and teacher Jen Gilbert, and her steps and influential effects on the Education system.  Gilbert is a professor at York University.  Jen Gilbert teaches courses ranging from topics such as Sexualties and Education, Adolescent Development and Health, Inquiries into Learning and even a Student Initiated Collaborative Inquiry.  Gilbert believes in supporting…
