Personal Learning Plan

My experience with assessment is somewhat limited. In my understanding, assessment allows teachers to help understand where each student stands with their work. Assessment highlights areas where students need improvement and indicates where a student may need extra help. Therefore, assessment determines if a student is ready to learn something new, while evaluation is just a final grade. I strongly believe that assessing after each lesion is more effective than relying on evaluation at the end.

While I lack experience in assessment and evaluation, I do have some concerns about grading my students in the future. The thought of explaining grades to parents worries me. I want to be able to provide a clear reason for a student’s grade and offer suggestions for improvements but I am not sure how to do so. Therefore, my confidence in using grades and feedback is not as strong as I would like it to be.

Providing helpful feedback on student’s work is better than giving them a number. My goal is to offer feedback that empowers students by acknowledging their strengths and helping them towards improvement. Therefore, I aim to discover a more effective and supportive approach to providing feedback to my students.

To address these challenges, I have set a S.M.A.R.T. goal “By April 11th, I want to gain confidence in providing positive and well-detailed feedback on my student’s assignments, assisting them in understanding their strength and areas for improvement.” This goal is like a guide to help me improve my ability to provide helpful feedback.

I chose this goal because I find the aspect of providing feedback to be the most challenging part of teaching for me. I believe that mastering this skill will likely make another aspect of my teaching a little bit easier. To achieve this goal, I will actively engage in class, focusing on the feedback techniques I learned during my teaching practices. Overall, I plan to become better at giving feedback and this S.M.A.R.T goal will be addressed on April 11th in my E-Portfolio to prove that I have accomplished it.
