I never realized I was better off economically than anyone else. In fact the realization never came to me until I met one of my friends. This friend helped open my eyes to the economic struggles that some people face. This friend was new in our school and he and I where at my house when we were about 17. I was showing him my house and then we went into the garage to look at our quad and snowmobiles.
“You guys are loaded.”
“No we are not.”
“Look at your house and all this stuff. You’re definitely rich.”
That was my friends only reaction. I had never thought of my family as being better off economically than anyone else in our town let alone rich. I realize now that we did have a little more money to spend than some people do. We have a nicely renovated house and vehicles that were not entirely necessary like quads and snowmobiles. All of this was normal for me however it showed my friend I was “wealthy” in a sense. I consider myself middle class but now know what my friend had never seen because he was not in the same economic class as me.
hi, Gavin.
I feel a little sad about your friend’s economic situation. Economic class is a very cruel but very realistic subject for me, so when people talking about this subject, I am not sure how I should express my feelings.
I like that you insinuate the topic of economic status in society through the dialogue between people, because this method makes the picture in my mind more vivid, I think your article is very touching, I think when you write this blog about economic class self-story, your mood must be heavy.
Overall, this is a very good blog, well done.
