The Final Stitch…

Well, I guess this is the end, everyone… the final post for my learning project. Looking back, this experience has truly been a roller coaster — filled with exciting highs, frustrating lows, and everything in between. When I first began, my goal wasn’t just to learn a new skill — it was to reconnect with a memory of crocheting with my grandmother. And now, as I finish this project, I can confidently say: I think I made her proud.

The Start of Something Special

The beginning was, to be honest, a little rocky. I had to rebuild my confidence with a craft I hadn’t touched in years. Holding the yarn felt unfamiliar, my stitches were uneven, and frustration was frequent. But with time, patience, and a lot of repetition, something amazing happened — I began to improve. Not only did my hands become more comfortable with the hook, but I also started to genuinely enjoy crocheting in my spare time. What started as an assignment slowly turned into something I looked forward to doing.

What I Learned Along the Way

Throughout this journey, I picked up more than just stitches. Here are three key lessons that really stood out to me:

  1. Don’t be afraid to try again.
Just because something doesn’t work the first (or fifth!) time doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing. Each mistake taught me something new.

  2. Crocheting is not easy — it takes focus, time, and patience.
It’s easy to underestimate it, but once I got into more complex patterns and techniques, I realized how much dedication this craft requires.

  3. Trying something new can lead to unexpected passions.
I stepped out of my comfort zone with this project, and it helped me discover a hobby I now love. I can proudly say crocheting has become a new creative outlet for me — one I’ll continue well beyond this class.

My Digital Toolkit: Exploring Online Learning

Another huge takeaway from this project was learning how to learn online. Experimenting with digital tools became one of my favourite parts of this process. YouTube was definitely my go-to resource — seeing stitches done up close and at a slow pace made it so much easier to follow along and learn properly. I found beginner-friendly creators who made crocheting feel achievable, not intimidating.

But YouTube wasn’t my only teacher. I also explored TikTok for short and snappy tips, and even used AI tools (like this one!) to answer specific questions, troubleshoot problems, and get explanations when I was stuck. Learning to navigate and compare different digital resources gave me more confidence as a learner — something I can carry into future projects.

Final Thoughts

As I reflect on this learning project, I feel a deep sense of joy, accomplishment, and growth. I spent countless hours researching, stitching, unravelling, and starting again. There were times I doubted myself — but I pushed through. That alone feels like a win.

What started as a class assignment turned into a personal journey of connection, resilience, and creativity. And while this might be the final blog post, it’s definitely not the final stitch. I plan to continue crocheting, learning new techniques, and maybe even passing this skill down one day — just like my grandmother did for me.

My Next Goal

Keep creating. Keep learning. And keep stitching.

Thanks for following along on this journey — and remember: every great project starts with just one loop.
