Stitching a Sail

This week I focused on cross stitching a simple sailboat pattern. I learned two things while working on my project this week:

  1. Cross stitch is very time consuming… and I mean VERY time consuming. Those squares are very tiny and it takes a lot of them to create a finished pattern, even a small one.
  2. It is way more difficult to follow a pattern than I expected. Luckily, I was able to find some helpful online resources to assist me with following my first multi-coloured pattern.

Although I had some difficulties following the pattern, these resources helped me figure out what I was doing wrong. Rather than trying to complete a single row or section and move on to the next, I was jumping around the pattern trying to finish one color at a time. I learned that my method was not very effective and made it easy to forget which stitches had been done and which area was incomplete.

Even though there are a few mistakes in my completed cross stitch (you can see in the shape of the second sail), I am proud I completed this pattern. It was a learning experience and I am grateful that there are so many easy to access resources available online to help me improve through this creative process.

  1. Looks like you are learning patience – which is a great skill for a future teacher to have. Hang in there it honestly looks like you are doing great and I don’t know much about cross stitching, but I think BOTH of your sailboats look lovely. ALSO thank goodness for the internet and all of the wonderful resources it provides! Keep it up!

    1. Thanks, Alyssa! This project is definitely teaching me patience! It has also opened my eyes to everything you can learn through online resources and how easily accessible these resources are.

  2. Grace,

Wow! You have some so far in such a short period of time. Do you have a specific pattern in mind for what you want to achieve by the end of the semester? I apologise if I missed it in a previous post!

  3. Grace,
when you were explaining the difficulties you came across this week, I was not expecting that stitch to be your final result. I think it looks great! Especially for a beginner. For that reason, I cannot wait to see what happens when you are more experienced!
    Thanks for sharing,
    Kylie
