She Sells Sea Shells

If you have been keeping up with my blog, you will know that a couple weeks ago I posted an update on one of my cross stitches via TikTok. As I continued that pattern, I realized that there was backstitching involved. This pattern became very frustrating for me as I did not know how to properly complete a backstitch, so I took a break from it. This week, I am here to share the completed pattern!

To solve the problem of the backstitch, I took to YouTube to find some techniques. When I am looking to learn something from YouTube, I usually make sure to watch multiple videos. This allows me to find a technique that works for me personally.

This backstitch tutorial for embroidery and cross-stitch is the source I found to be the most helpful. She does a great job of explaining how to complete a backstitch and different techniques involved. This video is from the Peacock & Fig YouTube channel, which posts a lot of helpful and informative videos with cross stitch tips and tricks. I highly recommend checking them out!

Another video I checked out was a beginner cross stitch tutorial. This video demonstrated the same basic technique that was used in the previous video, but it was completed on a more difficult pattern. Because the pattern being used was more complex, I found it more difficult to focus on and follow. If you are new to learning backstitching, I suggest finding a video that uses a very simple pattern so you are easily able to follow along.

Once I had an understanding of the backstitch technique, I was able to complete my pattern. Because this was my first time backstitching, I had a bit of difficulty getting my stitches in the proper spot. When looking at my finished product, you can tell that the shape of the starfish is slightly off. This is because my backstitch was off slightly from the pattern. Overall, I enjoyed learning how to backstitch because it added another dimension to the piece. I am excited to continue practicing and improving this technique.

Here you can see my finished product. AS you can see, the backstitches are not quite perfect. Regardless, I am still happy with how this piece turned out and I am happy I finished this pattern even though I became extremely frustrated with it. Cross stitching has definitely been working on my patience, but I am glad to have this opportunity to gain a new creative outlet.
