My First “Day in the Life”

My First “Day in the Life”

After filming my first video I have learned that even a one minute video takes A LOT of work. This week I downloaded TikTok and followed the tutorial for using the app and creating content. For a first time app user it took a little playing around before I understood what all the effects and filters did, and how to record a voice over.

Even though I would say for a first time video creator I was pretty successful, I did face a few challenges:

  1. Selecting the time cap on the video. I selected the 60 second option thinking that would be enough time, but because I included nearly everything I did that day, I later discovered this was not nearly enough time, and had to find a way to increase my time limit to 10 minutes after being halfway through the filming process.
  2. Keeping the text in the video. At certain points throughout the day the text at the beginning would just disappear?! I don’t know if it was something I did or a problem with the app, but I had to redo the text multiple times.
  3. The first half of the video I didn’t have long enough clips to talk over. This led me rushing through and I had no time for witty comments.
  4. Filming the VoiceOver took a few attempts because I would mess up or have awkward pauses, or just find my voice to be awkward (like at the beginning of the official video, but I was happy with the rest of it and did not want to record it for the hundredth time).
  5. I want to explore options for muting parts of the original video audio for my voice recording, and unmuting it for parts, like when I laugh in a part of the video. From all my exploration it seemed it was an all or nothing setting.
  6. I need to figure out how to make a thumbnail for posting on YouTube because the one YouTube picked was of my sandwich, and that doesn’t seem very intriguing.

Here is the video for reference…

*Note that I am posting the TikTok on Youtube because of the ease of integrating them into blog posts.

For my next video I will use the website Canva to create a more intriguing thumbnail and explore other websites where other TikTokers give tips on how to film Day in the Life videos.

  1. I have enjoyed making videos as well for my learning project. I would love to add a voice-over rather than my audience reading text! I have not thought about using TikTok yet, maybe I will give it a go next week! Thanks for the read!
