Math Operations BINGO

Math Operations BINGO

Rules: Our game is an adaptation of BINGO. Each player will be given a BINGO card with numbers 0 to 30 placed randomly on it and a pile of chips to cover the numbers that have been called. The teacher will randomly pull out number operation questions, like “2+3” and “7-4”, and students will then cover up the sum/difference (ex. 5 and 3) with their chips. The first one with any line wins a point. You could also play multiple games, and whoever has the most points wins, or fill the BINGO sheet for a blackout. Ideally, this game would be played in smaller groups when students are first learning these concepts and then play independently when they are more competent. You could also use multiplication, division, square roots, and exponents…for older students and picture representations for younger students. You could also allow students to have a piece of paper to help organize their thinking.

Learning Outcome:

Outcome N2.2: Demonstrate understanding of addition (limited to 1 and 2-digit numerals) with answers to 100 and the corresponding subtraction by:

  • representing strategies for adding and subtracting concretely, pictorially, and symbolically • creating and solving problems involving addition and subtraction
  • estimating
  • using personal strategies for adding and subtracting with and without the support of manipulatives
  • analyzing the effect of adding or subtracting zero
  • analyzing the effect of the ordering of the quantities (addends, minuends, and subtrahends) in addition and subtraction statements.

Indicators:

d) Generalize and apply strategies for adding and subtracting 1 and 2-digit numbers (with answers to 100).

g) Select and explain a mental mathematics strategy that can be used to determine a sum of up to 18 (or related difference): doubles, doubles plus one, doubles take away one, doubles plus two, doubles take away two, building on a known double
