Week 2 of 3

Two weeks already complete…only one more to go!

I knew that these three weeks would go by quickly but I still can’t believe that I am already halfway done!

We have had another busy week in grade two as we continued exploring poetry! I wanted to give my little poets a break from too much poetic writing so this week we focused on POWERFUL and DESCRIPTIVE words! My favorite lesson this week is when we worked on identifying POWERFUL words and creating Found Poetry out of old magazines. Working in pairs, my students looked through magazines in search of words that are meaningful and important such as LOVE, COURAGE, STRENGTH, COMMUNITY, HOME. They then cut these words out and thoughtfully glued them to a colored piece of paper to create a Found Poem. This lesson was very powerful because of the development the students made in being conscious of their word choices, as well as the incredible way they worked together with their partners to make meaningful decisions!

During this week we also learnt about Haiku poems and how to follow the specific 5,7,5 syllable pattern as we right, which my poets absolutely NAILED! We also studied Descriptive poetry by using our five senses! I gave my students the writing prompt of… “Imagine what you would see, feel, taste, hear, and smell if you were living in Saskatchewan 400 years ago.” I chose this prompt because it connected perfectly to the study of community in their Social Studies class as well as the field trip we went on in week 1 to the Royal Saskatchewan Museum! My students especially enjoyed this lesson because they got to take their writing outside to be inspired by their surroundings!

Next week we will be focusing on preparing for our final celebration of learning before I must return to my University classes!

Until next time,

Miss H.
