Teaching Philosophies

Pedagogy

  • I believe in building on what students already know
  • I believe students deserve assumed competence until proven otherwise
  • I believe in facilitating a culture of respect and resilience
  • I believe in connection before direction

Assessment

  • I believe assessment practices should reflect student learning and understanding, not just their ability to follow instructions and complete a task
  • I believe in triangulation in assessment to ensure valid and reliable data
  • I believe all assessment tools should be meaningful and have a concrete purpose
  • I believe in authentic assessment in education
  • I believe students should have a say in how their learning is assessed
  • I believe in equitable assessment practices that do not hinder the success of minoritized groups that face oppression.

Social Justice

  • I believe that all students deserve equity and respect throughout their education
  • I believe in teaching students about privilege and how can impact and disadvantage individuals
  • I believe in teaching respect and empathy to all, and that all people are deserving of respect despite their differences in opinions, experiences, lifestyle, or physical features.

Anti-Oppressive Education

  • I believe in universal designs for learning within all aspects of education
  • I believe in educating students on systems of oppression within society and preparing them to reject
  • I believe in Bloom’s taxonomy as a way to guide students’ learning process
  • I believe that individuals have multiple intelligences, and teachers should integrate learning opportunities beyond traditional teaching techniques.

Lifelong Learning

  • I believe it is important to model the values of a lifelong learner to my students
  • I believe in acknowledging the discomfort of learning something new
  • I believe that the motivation to learn new things represents resilience
  • I believe in teaching students to become lifelong learners by supporting them with empathy and compassion as they face and conquer new challenges daily.

My Teaching Manifesto

In my classroom, I will:

    • Ensure my classroom is a safe and comfortable learning environment.
    • Expand on my student’s prior knowledge, experiences, and background.
    • Make a personal connection with each of my students so I can fully support them and encourage their learning.
    • Carefully and thoughtfully plan my assessment practices to make sure all students are considered and supported.
    • Acknowledge social injustices and work to dismantle the inequality to the best of my abilities.
    • Ensure my assessment tools are accessible and adaptable for all learners
    • Model and amplify the ideals of lifelong learning, and support my students while they learn and grow.
