On my last week of the field placement, I worked with a few different classes. I started off observing a ⅞ split, I then observed a grade 5 gym class, and finished off the morning observing a grade 6/7 math class. As I was observing each class, teachers and educational assistants honor inclusive educational practices. In the grade ⅞ split individual work was encouraged by the teacher, this helps to keep the classroom quiet and helps in encouraging students to be individual learners. Help was needed from a few students. So the teacher would bring those students to the u-table and would help support those few students. The teacher was also good at ensuring each student was being heard and had a voice. For example, the social assignment that the students had due was very open. The students had the choice to do a presentation, an online slideshow, or a written out part of an essay. Having these options gives students multiple ways to speak and have their own voice in the classroom.
At my placement school there was a wide diversity of learners. EAL learners are starting from kindergarten to grade 8. There are two EAL teachers at St. Timothy, one for the younger grades and one for the older grades. In every classroom that I have been in, one of the two EAL teachers grab 3 to 4 kids to come into their own separate classrooms. At first, I did not know why these teachers were taking students out of class every day. This week I had the opportunity to speak to the two EAL teachers and understand how the needs of the EAL students are being met. When speaking to the EAL teachers they explained that it is easier to work with the younger grades because they are willing to learn and can catch onto things quicker. However, for the older students who are new to the school and Regina’s culture, it can be more difficult. The EAL teacher said they try their best not to use google translate so it’s not used as a crutch. However, it still can be used if the students need further explanation. Having specialized teachers who work closely with EAL learners ensures that the student’s needs are met and have an easier time learning.
