Blog Post #1- Commonsense

Kumashiro defines commonsense as the societal norms within the community. Kumashiro talks about what is expected in the United States compared to what is expected in other parts of the world such as; Nepal. Kumashiro learned that commonsense in Nepal was very different then what she grew up with. Kumashiro went to make a difference in their lives but her fun activities were not the norm for these students in this place. It is important to understand these norms because it will help you as the teacher understand your students more. Common sense helps humans function in society and teaches each individual the way to act in society. The concept of commonsense is usually ingrained in each of us more than we know. Sitting in a classroom and chewing gum we are not going to decide to throw it on the ground we will throw it into the trash because that is common sense. So many of us have preconceived ideas about what the teacher and student should do. It is expected for teachers to have more knowledge than students because that is just the way it has always been. The common sense of curriculum and pedagogy that I bring into this course is that I am learning what the course has to teach, but with individual creativity to it. Teachers have a box they can work in, but they can think outside of the box. What I mean is they teach what they need to, but they can make it fun in their own way. The curriculum is what is needed to be taught and pedagogy is the way or method the teacher teaches the information.
