Blog Post #3- Hidden Curriculum

I decided to read an article about the hidden curriculum. This article discusses how, because of how society expects students to act, certain beliefs, attitudes, information, and behaviors are suggested rather than explicitly taught as part of the hidden curriculum. The students are not aware of the covert curricula. A quote from the article reads, “Therefore, I agree that the hidden curriculum is an implicit curriculum that expresses and represents attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors which are conveyed or communicated without awareness and are manifested indirectly by words and actions which are parts of the life of everyone in a society,” (Alsubaie, 2015).

Being a teacher and not understanding the hidden curriculum can negatively affect the students. For this reason, teachers with a better understanding of the hidden curriculum can help children with their social skills. A better understanding will allow teachers to implement things into their teaching to send positive beliefs to the students. Utilizing this will allow for a better environment. Teachers can either use it in a positive or negative way. The article states that there are issues with the hidden curriculum when a teacher does not understand it, but when a teacher understands it and how to use the hidden curriculum, it can be beneficial and useful. The growth of a student can be closely related to what is taught to them with this method.

Going forward with this assignment I will be comparing the issues and benefits of the hidden curriculum in more detail. Why it is important for society, as well as why it is so important for teachers to have a good understanding of it since it is more of an unspoken education. Adding more quotations to the assignment I think will be important to give a good understanding of the topic.
