Tuning into new Tech!

Tuning into new Tech!

Hello, everyone! This week the new technology I tried was GuitarTuna! GuitarTuna is an app that allows you to tune a variety of stringed instruments. The app tunes your instruments by listening to the note being played and gives feedback on the sound and which direction it needs to be turned to be accurate. The app is very easy to use, and I’ve attached a video showing how easy it is to operate. Once you get past all the questions and free trials and stuff, you are able to tune easily anywhere. Although you can’t hear me pluck the string, you can see the icon telling me if the tuner needs to be turned higher or lower and the sound it makes when it’s correct.

Once in the app, on the tuning screen you can choose to manually or automatically pick which strings to tune. Automatic tunes whichever string you play, and manual, you just click on the note button (blue arrow). To choose between the two, there is a switch icon in the top right of the tuning screen (circled red in the image). As I mentioned before, you can also choose from a variety of instruments. To choose new ones or see the instrument options, there is a spot in the top left corner of the tuning screen that says which instrument you have chosen as well as an arrow (circled yellow in the image). If you click the word and scroll, it will show you the different options to choose from!

This tool would be fantastic in a classroom setting. This tool would be best used in a music or band class but could be used for whoever needs help tuning. I witnessed a middle years classroom all learn ukuleles, and this tool could be a part of the SAMR model, specifically augmentation. This tool could be augmented by having the students use it themselves by pulling the app up on a Chromebook. With how easy it is, you could show younger grades being introduced to tuning through this app with the listening feedback.

Note:

  • you will need a device with a microphone for this app
  • I was able to use this tool for my learning project and highly recommend

  1. Hi Heidi!

I have heard of guitartuna before. I have used a similar app in the past when I was trying to learn guitar which was Yousician. I found it quite helpful as well. I think it is very helpful you can change between different instruments that you are playing in this app. I think this would also help students at home when they are practicing their instruments if they have access to technology.
